On January 12th the small impoverished country of Haiti suffered a massive earthquake. Yesterday, against my better judgment I found myself watching the news coverage while working on curriculum. The images and stories are horrific and impacting. However, at the end of the day, something struck me that was surprising. While this tragedy is occurring, I am seeing something happen that I have not seen on the same scale in many many years. People around the world are coming together and helping one another. People across the globe are unwilling to be unaffected and do nothing for the people of this country. Now I am not saying that everyone is jumping on planes to help rebuild, not everyone is pledging a million dollars, but people are doing the small things they can even if that ‘small’ thing is sending up a prayer for those affected.
A person can’t forget about need in our own life, our own communities, and our own countries. But I do believe that humanity shows its best and sometimes worst colors in the face of tragedies like this one. As students and Instructors for the Early Learning and Child Care programs I know that the needs of children and people are very important to us. Why else would we care to wipe runny noses and run ourselves ragged chasing a roomful of children everyday? We do it because what happens to them matters to us, we do it because we see that this is the next generation and we can impact what happens to them. We do it because we love them, and I am honored to be a part of this profession and group.
So take some time today and count the blessing, no matter how small, in your life. As well, take heart in the outpouring of love and support that we can take comfort in knowing it exists in this Topsy Turvy world.
God Bless
